Dementia research

Are you interested in taking part in dementia research that could benefit you and other people affected by dementia?

Join Dementia Research  is a national service that makes it easy for anyone to take part in vital dementia research studies. It is managed by the National Institute for Health Research in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Alzheimer Scotland. People with dementia or memory problems, their carers and anyone who is interested can sign up. It is also possible to register on behalf of someone else, if it is in their best interests and you have Lasting Power of Attorney.

Only through research will we find new and better ways to prevent, treat, care for and hopefully one day beat dementia. There are lots of types of research. From testing new treatments, to surveys aiming to improve quality of life for people with dementia and their carers or looking into links between lifestyle and dementia risks. It is always your choice whether or not to take part in a particular study and you can opt out at any time. All studies have been ethically approved.

Volunteers can choose how far they wish to travel to be involved. Reasonable travel costs and expenses are reimbursed. Studies can take place in a variety of locations, for example - hospital, GP surgery, University or in the comfort of your own home. The locations will be dependent on the type of study being conducted. Phone call interviews and virtual meetings can also take place.

The amount of time required to take part depends on the nature of the study. Some may just be questionnaire based and may take between 20 – 45 minutes, others will involve a little more engagement, especially if several questionnaires are to be completed over a period of time or travel is required. The researchers will always advise you of the time commitment prior to you choosing to take part.

Many people who choose to take part in dementia research do so because they value the opportunity to make a difference.

For people with dementia, taking part in research often helps them to gain better understanding of their condition. Many find it a very positive experience and feel they are making a worthwhile contribution for future dementia care and treatment.

To sign up, you just need to provide some information about yourself which will enable the service to match you to suitable studies. You can choose how to be contacted if you match a study for example by phone, letter or email.
