Warwickshire County Council’s Localities and Partnerships team based in Stratford, and Stratford District Council organised an event to promote Dementia Friendly Communities in Stratford on Avon District on 11 September. The event at Ettington Community Centre aimed to increase awareness of dementia, what a dementia friendly community means and how to go about creating one. Twenty five people attended from around the district including interested residents, representatives from town & parish councils, local churches and other local organisations.
Presentations from Alzheimer’s Society covered what dementia is and also what makes a building dementia friendly. The Dementia Action Alliance’s Officer for the West Midlands explained what makes a community dementia friendly and the steps involved in becoming a dementia friendly community. After the presentations those attendees who were not already a dementia friend attended a dementia friends awareness session.
The County and District Councils have been supporting Southam and Wellesbourne to set up a dementia friendly community working group. It is hoped that the event on 11 September will kick start initiatives in other parts of the district.
