There is now strong evidence that the risk of developing dementia can be reduced by adopting the same healthy lifestyle behaviours as those which reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.

  • Drinking alcohol within the recommended guidelines of no more than 14 units a week for both men and women
  • Keeping cholesterol and blood pressure at a healthy level
  • Building wellbeing into your daily life and being socially and mentally active.

Other important facts are that:

  • It is never too late to reduce the risk of developing dementia
  • Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing
  • Dementia is only inherited in a small number of cases. This means that even if you have a family member with dementia, you may still be able to reduce your own risk of developing the condition through leading a healthy lifestyle
